De Amsterdamse wethouder van Cultuur, Carolien Gehrels (PvdA), pleitte vrijdag in de door haar
gehouden Boekmanlezing in het Amsterdamse stadhuis dat de politiek zich meer zou moeten bemoeien met de kunsten.
Op dit moment kunnen politici, volgens de wethouder, te weinig inhoudelijke invloed uitoefenen op kunst en cultuur.
'Kunst is niet alleen voor kunstenaars', en 'de overheid is een hoeder van waarden' waren enkele uitspraken van de wethouder.

VVD leider Mark Rutte was door Gehrels aangedragen als sparring partner. Volgens Rutte moet de overheid de kunst slechts faciliteren en zich verder verre van inhoudelijke bemoeienis houden. 'Kunst is geen vehikel van politiek ambities'
